Now you see her… and now you don’t. When Hinara isn’t shuffling through airport security on her way to another client site, she can be found at her desk on a call with a client before heading to a meeting to discuss—you guessed it—a client. Despite her go-go-go lifestyle, she will always have a minute to chat or help you troubleshoot an issue. With a coffee in one hand and juggling her two phones in the other, there’s no problem Hinara can’t fix.
1. When did you join CMiC and why?
I joined CMiC in May 2016. I applied to a job posting on LinkedIn during my search for a role that aligned with my education in business/IT and my previous experience as a consultant. Coming from a large organization, I appreciated how streamlined the hiring process was at CMiC.
2. What is your role at CMiC?
I was initially hired as a consultant, but I worked my way up into my current role as a Project Manager. In other words, I went from managing one small account to a variety of larger accounts at a high-level. There is a lot of overlap in these positions because, as a member of the Services team, our job is to take care of the customers’ software needs post-sale. This includes managing implementation schedules from start to finish; budgeting; preparing the infrastructure; and coordinating services with the clients to address their specific needs.
My day-to-day looks something like this: I travel 3-4 days a week—most weeks. At the client site, I’ll spend a bulk of my time consulting and training them to manage issues. The frequent travel has some nice perks, like visiting cool cities, but a lot of people forget the downsides, such as flight delays and not being home for extended periods of time.
3. Which airport is your favorite?
LAX because it has my favorite lounge (another consultant perk) and it serves guacamole. It’s the only airport I know of in the US that has guacamole—I know it’s LA, but come on, guacamole in an airport lounge?! Wow.
4. Share with me your best CMiC memory.
When I get to travel with coworkers because you get to know your team on a personal level. It doesn’t happen often because we’re busy servicing so many clients across the US and Canada.
5. Where is the best lunch spot?
The JE Dunn office (one of my clients). Their cafeteria serves good food and has free ice cream for employees (did you notice that food is a consistent theme of mine?). I get to visit some of the most impressive offices because our clients are some of the largest general contractors in the US.
Around the office, I like Bamiyan. My order is usually the chicken skewer with salad and bread. Or Sofra… so good.
6. What do you listen to on your morning commute?
I like to listen to podcasts both on the plane to the client site and on my commute to the office. I have ‘Freakonomics’ downloaded on my phone. It passes the time, and I feel like I’m being productive.
7. Go-to CMiC office snack?
The kiwi! But I also bring my own snacks of fruit and cookies.
8. What is your favourite part of the day?
Around 10 am when I grab my morning coffee and take my first break of the day. It’s my time to relax after the influx of whatever madness I was dealing with that morning, while still knowing that I have enough time to get everything else done. *Checks phone for any new emails and takes a sip of coffee*
9. Any tips for someone looking to join the CMiC team?
We’re always looking to collaborate—as a smaller company, you will have to work across many different departments and teams. If you can wear different hats and you’re a team player, I think you’ll do very well here.
Our team especially comes from different backgrounds, both in terms of their career and education. What everyone has in common is that they’re willing to learn!
