Graphics wizard. Internet savant. Resident Vaughan foodie.
Chris is an early bird who not only brings his positive attitude every day to the office but also brews the first pot of coffee on the 3rd floor in the mornings (not all heroes wear capes). From editing video footage to designing the new CMiC logo, Chris can solve any problem with the mighty brush tool in Photoshop.
1. When did you join CMiC and why?
I joined CMiC in August of 2017. I found the job posting online and thought learning about software could be an interesting next challenge. I never thought I would end up in construction technology, but now that I reflect on it, it makes sense that I’ve ended up in this industry. My previous organizations were either building the buildings I worked in or supplying the equipment to construction companies. Now I’m at a company that helps the construction firms do both—and more! I guess you could say that it was meant to be!
2. What is your role at CMiC?
I am officially the Graphic Design & Digital Media Manager, but really my job title should also include video producer, audio engineer, media planner and designer of cool CMiC-branded sweaters. This is because my role has drastically grown from what I was originally hired to do (which is something I’m ecstatic about!).
My day-to-day looks something like this: I come in (earlier than most) and open my two favourite programs, Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator. I then check my emails and figure out what creative problems need to be solved. The marketing team always have something going on, whether that be a tradeshow or creating another ad for an industry publication. Once I figure out what projects we’re working on, I coordinate with my team or with our Solutions team to better understand the technicalities of our product.
I also spend a good amount of time making mistakes—in other words, I’m always trying to figure out what’s working and what isn’t. That’s what makes marketing fun; it’s not always obvious what the answer is, but it’s through trial and error we learn what works best.
3. What is your favourite tool in Photoshop?
*Taps foot* It’s hard to choose just one. It’s like having to choose my favourite child…which I can’t because I don’t have kids, but I imagine it would be the same thing.
The eyedropper tool is convenient and handy because it picks up colours, but gun held up to my head, I would have to say the pen tool. It’s the one I probably use the most. It’s so simple but so versatile because you can create or trace any shape. The pen is my creative cane.
4. Share with me your best CMiC memory.
It’s hard to pick just one so I’ll say our annual holiday parties. One year we had a comedian, and I had a pretty good time. It’s also a great opportunity to see the many faces I may not in my day-to-day because they sit on different floors.
5. Where is the best lunch spot?
The brand-new kitchen on the third floor! Our kitchen was newly renovated and expanded to accommodate the employee growth. It has lots of sunlight and plants, making it the ideal spot for my mid-day break.
But if I decide to go out for lunch, I would pick Vincentina Meats. It’s an Italian specialty store and sandwich counter. My recommendation is to order the steak sandwich, but the secret is to ask for mustard. Funnily enough, my lunch time crew didn’t know you could request mustard (since it’s not on the topping menu), so for the longest time, my team and I brought our own mustard with us. That’s how committed we are to our sandwiches!
6. What do you listen to on your morning commute?
It only takes me 15 minutes to drive to the office. I always have the radio tuned into rock music.
7. Go-to CMiC office snack?
The oatmeal! The apple cinnamon flavor is always the first to go, and it’s unsurprising why.
8. What is your favourite part of the day?
Our weekly marketing meetings because it gives the team a chance to catch up and coordinate our efforts. Although we are a collaborative team, the time is a valuable opportunity to connect with those who may be travelling or working remotely.
9. Any tips for someone looking to join the CMiC team?
Because we have such a robust product suite, it’s impossible for an individual to learn everything about the software. If you love getting to know people and working as a team across departments, you’ll be successful at CMiC. Even if you’re shy, don’t worry! There are plenty of opportunities to get to know people through company extracurriculars such as the Social Committee or Thursday board game night.
I will end by saying that you should come with your ideas. CMiC is proud to have a culture where employees are heard, and it’s what makes us unique.
